Skin Concerns

Acne and Oily skin

Do you struggle with painful, unwanted, inflamed and uneven often sore acne?

What are the causes of Acne?

Genes and hormones are the major cause behind acne and oily skin, however many other factors may add to this condition including lifestyle, diet and the lack of a proper skin care routine. Although the natural oil and sebum that the skin produces is healthy, (it forms a layer that moisturizes and adds a natural shine) everything is best when in balance. However, when in excess it is likely to become the reason for clogged pores, dead skin and when mixed with oils and bacteria it causes the formation of acne.

Acne appears in various different forms from Papules (small bumps), Pustules (pimples), Whiteheads (shallow bump with the build-up of sebum and dead skin cells), Blackheads (shallow bump with dead skin cell, hair and sebaceous gland) to Cysts and Nodules (these are bigger, deeply rooted, slow to heal and painful).

Acne Scars

Acne scars are the result of inflammation of acne blemishes.

What causes Acne Scars?

Acne scars are lesions that form when dead skin, oil and bacteria are deposited into hair follicles. When a follicle enlarges/inflames due to an excess of sebum, it breaks the wall of the follicle which intern disperses pus into the nearby healthy tissues. This cross infection in the dermis and hypodermis layers of the skin results in the formation of acne scars on the epidermis layer. Usually these scars appear when the acne has cleared, making the skin look uneven, red and pitted.

Acne can cause many different types of scars such as: Hyper-pigmentation (these are not scars, but some discolouration), Keloids (discoloured, raised and bumpy skin), Boxcar Scars (shallow scars with sharp edges), Icepick Scars (mild depressions) and Rolling Scars (wave-like scars).

Skin tone & texture

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and ages just as the rest of our other organs.

What causes an uneven complexion?

An adult’s skin regenerates itself over the course of a 28 day cycle, which is a process that involves new skin cells forming beneath the surface to replace matured ones. This cycle is necessary so that the body is constantly protected from numerous external factors such as heat, weather, trauma, germs and bacteria. As everything in our body, the skin starts to naturally age due to hormonal changes and continuous exposure to outside elements, resulting in the skin’s regenerating cycle to slow down. This starts the process of accumulating dead skin in the epidermis layer which causes the skin to look duller than it originally was. In turn the skin also stops maintaining the moisture in the epidermis layer and this may result in dry skin.

Moles & Skin Tags

A beautiful thing is never perfect. – Egyptian Proverb.

What is a mole?

Moles are simply clusters of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes and are a very common type of skin growth. Moles often appear as small, round, dark brown spots on the skin. Some moles, depending on where they are, are referred to as beauty marks.

Should I have my mole removed?

Moles are common, however there are certain moles which may be a sign of a more serious skin condition, like melanoma. It’s important to keep an eye on ones moles as they can be an indication of skin cancer. If you are concerned about any of the following, we suggest that you see a dermatologist: asymmetry (one side looks different to the other), borders (jagged, scalloped or blurred borders), colour (changing in colour, blue-black or more than one colour), diameter (anything larger than a pencil eraser) or that the mole is evolving (changing or growing).

What is a skin tag?

Skin tags are made up of blood vessels and collagen, surrounded by an outer layer of skin. It’s unclear exactly what causes skin tags, however since skin tags generally appear in skin folds – sweat and friction may play a role.

Please note: ALL moles will have to be examined and approved by a Doctor or Dermatologist. No procedure will be performed without written consent.
